LINAC Monte Carlo simulation exercise

The European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) coordinates research and development in the field of radiation dosimetry. In this frame, EURADOS Working Group 6 “Computational Dosimetry” initiates an action which is devoted to the comparison of the modelling of a medical accelerator, using Monte Carlo codes, with measurements. This exercise is aimed at developing a Monte Carlo simulation model of a well characterised medical linear accelerator (LINAC), used in a primary laboratory, that can be used as an experimental benchmark. This action is motivated by the need of an accurate dose evaluation in the new radiotherapy treatment modalities, such as IMRT. The model proposed in the present action is expected to help users to develop the skills for a proficient Monte Carlo simulation in this field.

The exercise is split into two main tasks, the adjustment of simulation parameters using measured data in a water phantom, and the calculation of dosimetric data in case of heterogeneities. These calculated data will be compared with measurements.
The Agenda of the action is:

  • Proposal disseminated in May 2010

  • Results provided to the organizers by October 2011

  • A workshop will be organized in June 2012

This exercise is addressed to researchers in medical physics, hospital physicists, calibration laboratories, primary laboratories, radiation protection groups and Treatment Planning System developers. The full description is available HERE and the complete proposal can be downloaded HERE

Participants who intend to propose a solution to this action are kindly asked to send an e-mail to:
